Description	In this workshop, participants will learn writing tips and strategies that can help support them in successfully writing a graduate thesis or dissertation. Participants will also have the opportunity to experience hands-on activities exploring a sampling of productive writing practices, such as goal-setting, freewriting, and text mapping. A list of helpful on campus, print, and digital resources on academic and graduate-level writing will also be provided.

Description	Discussion sessions play an important role in helping students understand course content and expand their knowledge. In this session, we will discuss a process to help you prepare your discussion sessions, tips to help you facilitate the discussions in a way that ensures smooth flow and adequate coverage, and a system to evaluate student contribution to class discussions.

Description	When discussing the impact of technology on post-secondary education, there is an increasing shift from lecture-style teaching to more interactive approaches. Blended learning has become increasingly prevalent within post-secondary education because of this shift. A reoccurring theme present in research on students’ experiences with technology in their post-secondary studies is the blended learning environment, often citing that students prefer and learn most in a blended classroom. When choosing to integrate technology into the classroom however, it is essential that solid pedagogy must precede technology. The technology chosen should facilitate students’ comprehension and provide additional insight as to students’ motivation to learn. One method used to engage students is that of competition-based learning; where learning is achieved through a competition but not necessarily the student’s achievement within said competition. This workshop will introduce the online tournaments offered by Top Hat™. These tournaments combine the motivational aspect of direct peer-to-peer competition with content assessment; “gamifying” your exam review! Attendees will learn how to create a tournament and have the chance to participate in a real-time competitive tournament. We will then demonstrate how to integrate tournaments into classroom instruction and discuss the effect on student outcomes based on previous classroom experience with this tool.

Description	Today, researchers from all fields have access to a variety of tools they can use to find and share information and ideas, to disseminate research, to collaborate, and to promote themselves on the job market. In defying the conventions of publisher-gateways, geographical limitations, and paper-based dissemination and recruitment, web-based applications have become a defining resource of the web generation. This workshop will introduce participants to a variety of freely available technologies being used by academics around the world. The workshop facilitator will share experience using academia.edu, researchgate.net, twitter, and LinkedIn for professional purposes. Participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences, concerns, and questions related to web technologies for researchers. Time permitting, the literature-organizing applications Mendeley and Zotero, as well as the search tool Google Scholar, will also be discussed.
